You need to have your provisional licence before applying to do the Theory Test. There are two parts to the test – Multiple Choice & Hazard Perception.The multiple choice section consists of 50 questions. Next to each question is a choice of potential answers.
- You need to select the correct answer by touching a screen in the appropriate place.
- You will be given 57 minutes to complete the multiple choice part of the test.
- You need to achieve a score of 43 out of 50 correct answers
Before you start there is a short tutorial which will explain how the test should be undertaken. You will be given the opportunity to complete practice questions to make sure that you understand the procedure.We strongly recommend that you take your time and fully familiarize yourself with the setup.
Hazard Perception Test
The hazard perception section will start with a short tutorial video, played on the computer screen.
This will explain how the hazard perception test should be undertaken. Then you will be shown 14 video clips of approximately 1 minute each.
There are 15 hazards to find, at least 1 on each clip. However 1 clip will have 2 hazards. The clips will contain no sound.
You can score up to 5 points for each hazard, depending on how quickly you identify them.
You need to score 44 out of 75 to pass.

How to book the Theory Test
Booking by Phone
To book a theory test with an operator over the phone you will need a valid Provisional licence and a valid debit or credit card for payment (Visa, Mastercard, Delta, Visa Electron, Switch/Maestro and Solo cards are accepted)
You can book a theory test over the phone on 0845 600 6700 local rate, from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday, and Saturday between 8.oo am and 4.00pm, except on Bank Holidays. Text phone is also available by calling 0870 0106 372.
When you book your test you will be given a reference number and sent an appointment letter that you should expect to receive within four working days of your call. If you do not receive your appointment letter within this time then contact the booking office.
Booking by Post
To book a theory test by post you will need an application form. Application forms are available online, from theory and practical test centres and if applicable from your driving instructor. Payment can be made by cheque or postal order, but cash payments are not accepted. Postal orders and cheques must be made payable to Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency. Please write your Driving Licence number on the back of your cheque or postal order.
